General Tso’s-Style Ground Chicken

If you love making your own Chinese food at home, stick around until the end.

It’s -2 degrees here in Oklahoma and it’s now been more than a week since I left the house. The Mobile Meals program I volunteer with has been closed. I’m working from home so I don’t need to drive into work. I’m glad I don’t have to leave the house, don’t get me wrong, but I’m going a little stir crazy.

Most of the Midwest & Texas are in various stages of deep freeze right now. I have a lot of friends in Texas whose power is out because of rolling blackouts. I know many who aren’t going to work for the next few days (we’re expecting ANOTHER winter storm tomorrow). If that Chinese food craving strikes, what are you going to do?

No need to venture out and get takeout or spend exorbitant prices on delivery. Make your own Chinese favorite at home!

Most of these ingredients I bet you have on hand. Hoisin might be a little harder to come by, but you can easily substitute teriyaki sauce or leave it out completely. It won’t alter the flavor *too* much.

Serve this General Tso’s style ground chicken on a bed of white or brown rice. Top with some scallions if you’re feeling frisky. Serve with some dumplings to fill you up more.

Check out my recipe index for more homemade takeout favorites. I have an iron-clad lo mein recipe, General Tso’s shrimp recipe, and a low-carb lo mein, just to name a few.

Enjoy!

A simple, one-pan General Tso's recipe that tastes as good as takeout.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground chicken or turkey
  • 1 TBS. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 tsp. red chili flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 TBS. rice vinegar
  • 3 TBS. soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 TBS. sugar
  • 1 TBS. cornstarch
  • Rice and sesame seeds, for serving

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet. Add chicken, red chili flakes, salt and garlic. Stir and cook until browned, about 4-5 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk together rice vinegar, soy sauce, hoisin, water, sugar and cornstarch. Stir in sauce into chicken pan. Cook on medium-low heat until sauce is thickened and coats chicken, another 4-5 minutes.
  3. Serve chicken over rice and toppe with sesame seeds or sliced scallions.
