Sausage & Pepper Wontons

I was gifted a few cookbooks the other day and I immediately set out to cook something from inside of them.

A few things in an air-fryer centric cookbook caught my eye and almost all of them were wontons/potstickers. I have long been cooking wontons in my air fryer (my favorite are the Bibigo chicken & cilantro mini wontons) and I know they crisp up perfectly when cooked that way.

I decided to take a recipe I saw and adapt it to something I craved: Italian sausage & peppers. It’s my favorite meal to make when I’m not feeling up to cooking a large dinner because it’s so simple. You can make it by itself, make it into sandwiches, or serve it over pasta.

Half the time I just make it by itself and eat it as is. There’s something comforting about Italian sausage and a mix of bell peppers.

I can honestly say I’ve never had it in wonton form. After this experiment, though, this may be my new go-to form of the classic Italian entree. Not only is it easy to make–it’s absolutely delicious, especially when dipped in pizza sauce.

This is the ultimate snack and party food. Be prepared to impress anyone you serve it too! Think of it like homemade pizza rolls.

Enjoy!

A simple snack or appetizer to make that combines the classic Italian sausage & peppers with wontons.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground Italian sausage

  • 1 TBS. olive oil

  • 1 red bell pepper, minced

  • 1 orange bell pepper, minced

  • 1 tsp. oregano

  • 1 tsp. Italian seasoning

  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 package wonton wrappers (about 48 needed)

  • Pizza sauce, for serving
  • Directions

    1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium high heat. Add minced peppers and saute for 2-3 minutes or until slight tender.
    2. Add Italian sausage to skillet, breaking up while cooking. Season with oregano, Italian seasoning and Worcestershire sauce. Cook until browned, about 5-6 minutes. Remove pan from heat and let mixture cool.
    3. Once mixture is cooled, build your wontons. Spoon a little bit into the center of a wonton wrapper. Dip finger in water and run around the edge, then fold, pressing edges together.
    4. Air fry about 10-12 at a time on 360 degrees for 8 minutes. Serve with pizza sauce for dipping.
