Cheeseburger Bake

I’m an avid collector of cookbooks.

I’m not picky, either. I’ll collect old cookbooks, new cookbooks, cookbooks from recognizable chefs, obscure cookbooks, church cookbooks, cookbooks that are falling apart…you name it.

My FAVORITE cookbooks to find in the wild, though, are Gooseberry Patch cookbooks.

Gooseberry Patch started in the late 80’s as a mail-in recipe catalog business. Two neighbors in Ohio started the company and it expanded over the next several decades. Since 1992, 200 cookbooks have been published by the company.

I have 5 of those cookbooks. Most of the time when I buy a cookbook, I’m lucky to get 1-2 recipes that interest me. Gooseberry Patch cookbooks are different. I ALWAYS find numerous incredible recipes in them.

This recipe came from the “5 Ingredients or Less” cookbook, which is one of the company’s best sellers. I dog-eared several pages in that cookbook and am working my meal prep plan around those recipes for the next several weeks.

“Cheeseburger Bake” sounded like a great meal for my husband. It had all the things he likes in it: ground turkey, cheese, and spicy taco seasoning. I’m not really sure why this is called Cheeseburger Bake when it more closely resembles a taco pie, but I’m going to keep the name going in honor of my favorite cookbooks.

This is a fantastic recipe for people who are just starting to cook for themselves. I’ve noticed if a recipe calls for crescent rolls, it’s going to be a quick and easy recipe. Anybody can make this recipe easily.

A simple, all-in-one dinner that can be made out of meat and crescent rolls.

  • 1 lb. ground beef or turkey
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (1 oz) packet of spicy taco seasoning
  • 1 (8oz) tube of crescent rolls
  • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out crescent roll dough and place into a greased 9″ pie pan, pinching seams closed and working dough into a pie crust.
    2. Bake crescent rolls for 10 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
    3. While crescent rolls are baking, cook the meat. Brown ground beef or turkey in a large skillet over medium high heat until well cooked.
    4. Stir in tomato sauce and taco seasoning into the ground meat. Continue cooking for 3-4 more minutes, stirring so everything is well combined.
    5. Spoon meat mixture on top of cooked crescent rolls. Sprinkle cheese on top and return to oven, uncovered, for another 10 minutes.
